How to Create Goals at Work and in Your Career That You Can Keep Meeting



Setting and achieving goals in your life and career is a crucial aspect of personal and professional growth. Whether you're starting a new job, working on a big project, or striving to set your career on a successful trajectory, goal setting provides you with a roadmap to reach your aspirations. In this blog, we will explore the steps to create and meet both short-term and long-term goals, using the SMART criteria and actionable planning. We'll also introduce the 30-60-90 and 1-5-10 templates to help you structure your goals effectively.


Keep your goals SMART


Specific: Clearly define what you want to achieve in your goals – avoid vague objectives, making sure your goals are well-defined and specific. Instead of “I want to do better at work”, go with “I want to make more sales” or “I want to increase leads”.


Measurable: Establish metrics or indicators to gauge your progress, so that you can accurately measure your achievements. This will allow you to track progress and adjust your strategies as you go. Instead of “I want to make a lot more sales this quarter”, choose “I want to make 20% more sales this quarter” or “I want to make 15 sales this quarter”.


Achievable: While you want your goals to be challenging, you also want to be able to meet them! If you continuously set goals that you can’t reach, you may become disillusioned with your progress and feel like you’ll never succeed. Make sure to take your current resources, skills, and time into account to make sure you can meet those goals!


Relevant: Make sure your goals are aligned with your career and life objectives, and which will contribute to your success and well-being. Think about where you want to be in the next month, 3 months, and year. What do you need to do to get there?


Time-bound: Set deadlines for yourself – this will create a sense of urgency and allow you to stay on track. If you set a goal of increasing your sales by 20%, but don’t give yourself a date to achieve this by, you might feel no need to work hard to get there in time!


Setting short-term goals using the 30-60-90 plan

Short-term goals are essential for immediate progress and momentum. The 30-60-90 template helps you structure your goals for the first three months in a new job or project. Goals for the first 30 days should be focused on adapting to the new environment and understanding your responsibilities. Goals for the next 60 days can involve honing your skills, building relationships, and contributing to your team's success. Goals for the last 90 days may revolve around taking ownership of projects and making a noticeable impact. Create goals for each timeline using the SMART guidelines.


Set long-term goals using the 1-5-10 plan.

Long-term goals lay the foundation for your career's trajectory and should be aligned with your aspirations. The 1-5-10 template helps you plan for your career growth over the next 1, 5, and 10 years. The 1-year goals may involve mastering your current role, taking on more significant responsibilities, or acquiring new skills. The 5-year goals should focus on moving up the career ladder, possibly managing teams, and gaining expertise in your field. The 10-year goals aim for significant accomplishments, such as leadership positions, entrepreneurship, or industry recognition.


Create action plans.

Break down your short-term and long-term goals into daily, weekly, and monthly tasks by reviewing each of your goals and asking yourself “What can I do today to make progress towards this goal? What can I do this week? This month?” This will allow you to hit consistent milestones, getting closer to your goals every day! It will also allow you to reevaluate and refine your goals periodically based on your achievements and experiences.
