Everything You Need to Do to Prepare for Your Job Search

Looking for a new job can be a daunting task, especially if you’re a new graduate or if it’s been a while since you’ve applied for a position. Read on for some tips on what your first steps should be!

1. Prepare Your Resume

If you haven’t searched for a job before, or if it’s been a few years, your very first step should be to make sure your resume is up to date and in tip-top shape. Check out our post Tips for a Fantastic Resume for some tips on a resume that will maximize your job opportunities!

2. Write a Great Cover Letter

A cover letter is the second most important thing you’ll need to prepare before searching for a job. Although you should be customizing your cover letter for each job you apply for, a large portion of it can remain constant. Check out our tips for writing cover letters here.

3. Update Your LinkedIn Profile

In the age of the Internet, it’s a really good idea to make sure potential employers can find you. Most jobs are found through job search sites, including LinkedIn, so make sure your profile is up-to-date and shows off your skills! Check out this post for some tips on getting your LinkedIn profile set up.

4. Get Some Letters of Recommendation & References

Letters of recommendation and references are a great way to show future employers that you’ve done good work in the past, and that someone is prepared to back that up! Past bosses or coworkers that you have a good relationship with are great people to ask! Instead of providing a generic 'references available upon request', show employers you are serious about your job search by including a total of three personal and professional references.

5. Double-Check Your Online Presence

Before starting your job search, do a quick Google search of your name. What shows up? Is it something you want potential employers to see? Do a similar review of social media – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, anything you use – if you don’t want it seen by an employer, be sure to delete it or make the account private.

6. Work on Your Interview Skills

Once you start applying for jobs, you’ll want to make sure you’re ready for any interviews you may have! Read up on our top Job Interview Tips and get prepared!
